Blog #1: Summer Vacation

Misaki Yoshioka

Good evening!

Today I want to talk about my summer vacation in San Diego, California.
I stayed at University of California San Diego (USCD) for about 2 weeks and studied at a graduate school. I went there with 26 other Japanese university students from Tokyo and Kanagawa.
We interacted with many foreign students staying at USCD for the summer. Also, we had an opportunity to meet with permanent UCSD students as well.

I made wonderful memories in San Diego, but I will introduce you two of my favorite things I did.

First, my friend and I became very good friends with some students who were permanently studying at UCSD. They were very nice to us and took us to a major league baseball game for free. We went to see Angels (LA) vs. White Sox (Chicago). Anaheim won 6 to 0!

Second, going to the beach was one of the most fantastic activities we did. The beach was beautiful; especially the sunset.

I hope you have spent a nice time over the summer break as I did.

See you soon!

  3. Misaki,
What program did you join for this study abroad experience? As you said in class, you stayed with a host family. Please tell us about them. And what did you study while you were there? I have never been to San Diego before - please tell us more about it. Your photo from the beach at sunset is really beautiful. Did you go swimming too?
The baseball game must have been fun - are you a baseball fan?
Looking forward to more details about your trip. You can add them to this blog post or write a comment.

  4. Ms.MacGregor,

Thank you for commenting on my blog!

I joined the program called “Future Global Leaders” produced by UCSD. I didn’t stay with the host family- I’m sorry for my mistake in class. I stayed at a dorm and shared rooms with a friend. The room was for 4 people to share so my friend and I was very lucky to use the room free and easy.

We took classes like politics, economics, and international relationship. For politics, we learned about Japan’s politics, US politics, and California politics. About international relationship, we talked about problems going around the world and how that relates to our lives.

It was my first time to go to San Diego. UCSD is located really close to the ocean so the ocean wind made it cloudy all through the day. Even though it was middle of the summer, it was very chilly because of that. (I don’t like hot weather so it was perfectly fine with me) However, the downtown was very hot and sunny. I went to the San Diego Zoo. The place was huge and there were tons of animals than Japan’s zoo. I really enjoyed my stay in San Diego.

I can’t swim so I didn’t go swimming, but a lot of my friends were. I enjoyed watching the beautiful sunset and the ocean waves.
I’m not a baseball fan, but I really enjoyed watching it at the stadium. It made it more special than watching it from the TV screen. I understood why the core fan prefers to watch it live at the stadium.

  5. Hi Misaki,
Thanks for your comments and details. I have been to LA and Santa Barbara (with student) and I heard that San Diego was nice. It sounds like you chose a good summer program, among the zillions to choose from. Your comment about watching baseball live is interesting - I am not a fan either, but maybe going to a live game will convert me.
