Kaori Motoda
Good evening.
Recently, it's been cold and the weather isn't nice that I prefer staying inside the house and relax instead of going out when I have a day off.
There isn't so much things to do in the house, so I started reading a book called "Room" by Emma Donoghue which I found in a book store few months ago.
I haven't finished this book yet, but it is about a 5-year-old boy called Jack and his mother, trapped in a single, locked room. Jack's mother was abducted from the age of 19 by a man called Old Nick, who comes to the "room" only at night and brings foods and supplies for them.
Jack has never been outside of the room, so the only world for him was the "room". Fortunately, they succeeded on escaping from Old Nick, but the story doesn't end there. It is written how they struggled after they came back to the normal world, because the case attracted the attention of the mass media too much and they had some physical and mental problems, locked up in one place for years.
This book is written by the eyes of Jack, so you could understand Jack's emotions and feelings, and it is easy to get into the story, though it makes you sad a little.
I'm very interested in how the story ends.
We say autumn is an season of reading, eating, and sports in Japan.
I hope everybody will enjoy this wonderful season.
Thank you for reading.
See you in class!

Thank you for introducing an interseting book! Is this book based on a true story? Your summary was really easy to follow. I am interested in how the story ends too! I haven't been reading books in English for a while but by reading your blog, it made me want to read books again.
ReplyDeleteSee you on Tuesday!
Misaki Yoshioka
Kaori,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a scary story. What a terrible fate the boy had. I hope there is a happy ending.
I love to read too, though I have little time these days. At the moment, I am reading The Widower's Tale, by Julia Glass. It is her third book and I have read and enjoyed the first two.
Another author I like is Sarah Dunnant. I started with Bel Canto and have read pretty much everything she has written too.
Please check these authors out. If they do not have their own home pages, I am sure you can find out about them elsewhere. And I am sure you can read excerpts from their books online to give you an idea of what they are like.
Happy reading!
Ms. MacGregor
Thank you for introducing us such an interesting book.
ReplyDeleteI wonder whether it is based on a true story, too.
If so, what a terrible story!
But I really want to know the end.
I haven't read English books either-mostly Japanese novels.
Your blog made me want to challenge English books again.
Megumi Shoda
Misaki and Megumi,
ReplyDeleteThis story is fiction, but still, it was shocking to read the story since it was realistic and it is possible to happen in anyone.
Although, this story is mainly about how they get over through those horrible experiences after they got rescued, so it is more humanism than just a sad story.
Tell me anytime if you want to read this!
Kaori
Ms,MacGregor,
ReplyDeleteI will check those authors soons as I finished this book. Thank you for introducing some authors, because I don't know much about English writers and I always wonder around in the book store for hours trying to find a good book.
Kaori
Kaori,
ReplyDeleteYou might want to have a look online for English books - at amazon.co.jp for example you can sometimes browse an excerpt from the book. I subscribe to some book club newsletters so I get news about new books from there. I check the ones I am interested in online and browse an excerpt from the book and read some book reviews to help me make my choice.
Please let me know if you read any of the books I recommended.
